Burbank Art Assn. president Doris Vick is putting the group back on the map.
By Joyce Rudolph, The Burbank Leader.
The nonprofit organization's purpose, Doris Vick said, is to entice new artists to the field, she said.
"Mainly the thing we do is try and encourage young people going into the art field," she said.
As president, last year she worked with the city to move the group's monthly meeting place from the Burbank Board of Realtors headquarters to the City Hall Annex, because the old location had steep stairs and no elevator, so was difficult to access. "The city has provided us with a mini gallery, so every month, we'll have three or four members bring paintings that will hang for a month," she said. "So everybody will have a chance to hang some of their pictures."
A project she hopes to accomplish during this term in office is encouraging local businesses and restaurants to display members' works.
Doris Vick has pulled the organization back together, said Karen Bauman, chairwoman of the association's programs.
"She's always got ideas and works with everybody and gets us all to work together [at] putting this club back on its feet," she said.
"She's dynamite. If she wants to do something, even if it's a big thing, she's right in there with you."
Doris Vick started painting by joining a class with friends during the 1970s. "I always wanted to paint," she said.
What she enjoys most about painting is it helps her unwind, she said.
"You lose yourself in the painting," she said. "It's a really relaxing outlet."
